NATIONAL PERFORMING ARTS TROUPE

The National Performing Arts Troupe (NPAT) is the amalgamation of the former National Theatre Company and Raun Raun Theatre. NPAT consists of the National Production Unit. The main function is to develop and utilise theatre in Papua New Guinea at all levels of society, with particular emphasis at the village level. Through performing arts, folklore, traditional dance and expressions are displayed.

The National Performing Arts Troupe has these objectives to pursue;

(a) Developing and utilising theatre in Papua New Guinea as a tool for communication and social change at all levels of society, with particular emphasis at the village level; and (b) Utilising theatre to promote Papua New Guinea identify through major folk, traditional and contemporary operas and productions; and (c) Promoting traditional Papua New Guinea cultures by establishing a repertoire and performing traditional dances and songs; and (d) Developing theatre as a professional art form, and (e) Supporting and developing formal and informal training theatre at the national and regional theatres; and (f) Staging local, regional, national and internal theatre and cultural festivals; and (g) Domestic and overseas festivals; and Developing and assisting provincial and village theatre and cultural groups; and (i) Entering into affiliations or becoming members of international theatre and cultural organizations; and Any other prescribed matter.

Stage Production

National Performing Arts Troupe (N.P.A.T.) is tasked with the responsibility of developing and utilising theatre as a tool for communication and social change at all level of the society in Papua New Guinea.
This is where the N.P.A.T will have to come up with a major productions to showcase the institutions objectives.

Children Theatre Workshop

Under this programme, school children would be trained in all aspects of traditional Papua New Guinea and contemporary dance and dramas so that they will be able to acquire the knowledge of their cultural heritage.
This programme would be conducted every weekend, for about two (2) to three (3) months. The program commenced in 2004. For the start, it was  conducted in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.
This project will provide a valuable boost to traditional culture in the face of an expanding influence of foreign popular culture.
This programme will definitely require the services of elderly men and women from the villages to assist National Performing Arts Troupe Staff.

Goroka Show, Coffee Festival and Bilasim Skin Festival

It is the responsibility of this important cultural institution to participate in this three festivals that are annually held in Goroka.
National Performing Arts Troupe over the years has actively involved in these festivals because it is one area where the institution promotes the objectives of National Cultural Commission.

Theatre Production Research

This research project  was carried out in 2004 is aimed at researching and documenting stories of the Yali Sigina of Madang Province.
These stories once researched and documented will be used to write up script for possible theatre productions produced using the Yali Sigina stories of the Madang province. This programme and similar stories from other parts of the country will also be researched and documented for future theatre productions.
