| INSTITUTE OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA STUDIES The Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies is responsible to the Commission within the limits of funds and the resources lawfully available to it: (a) Carry out research into recordings and interpretation of all aspects of traditional culture of the indigenous inhabitants of the country and (b) Establishing a library of Papua New Guinea folklore; and (c) Making all its records available for the development of literature, drama, music and the visual arts; and (d) Determining the terms and conditions under which persons wishing to conduct research into any aspects of traditional culture may be allowed to do so; and (e) The systematic recording of the music of the country with a view to the establishment of a tape and record library of such music; (f) Developing a film-making program to document indigenous arts and crafts and (g) Developing a publication program to inform the people of the country about all aspects of indigenous culture; and (h) Establishment and maintaining a trus fund tom be used to finance research into the indigenous culture of the country; and (i) Any other prescribed matters The institute has written and produced some nineteen (19) fine books based on Papua New Guinea legends, songs of spirits, traditional music and instruments, mission and music and many more. It has also produced some famous films in conjunction with the National Film Institute (NFI) such as "The First Contact", "Black Harvest", "Angels of War" and many others. Publication of Journal Kulele This project is one of the very important programmes of the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies in carrying out research, recording, documenting and interpreting all traditional and contemporary cultures in music and dance in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. The publication of traditional and contemporary music (Kulele) are mainly scholarly journals that are used mainly for academic purposes. This is supposed to be an on-going project for the Institute although it has been affected due to budget constraints. The Commission intends to continue with this project this year. Literature Competition 2004 (IPNGS) The Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies (IPNGS) revived the Literature Competition in 2004 which is aimed to encourage talented nationals to creative writing and to edit, publish and distribute a quarterly journal Bikmaus. This competition will be conducted in an annual basis with the winning entries logically compensated in the form of loyalties and prices. This competition was launched in June 2004 by the National Cultural Commission. |
